Transferring to Birthcare after birthing at another hospital

If you are unable to birth at Birthcare, you are still welcome to transfer after birth for your postnatal stay, even if you have had a caesarean section. You are able to stay for up to 3 nights.

Generally if you have had a normal birth, we would expect you to transfer as soon as possible after birth but within 24 hours. If you have had a caesarean section, we would expect you to transfer within 48 hours. Please read our transfer criteria Satff at Auckland Hospital will contact Birthcare day ot night once you baby has been born and you are ready to transfer to Birthcare.

Your Lead Maternity Carer will visit you while you are at Birthcare, however, if they are busy and not able to do so, our midwives will take good care of you and keep in touch with your LMC. We have 24 hour midwifery care.

The standard of midwifery care at Birthcare is very high. The midwives like to spend with you to assist you to become confident to go home with your baby.

We have lactation consultants on staff as well as a lactation clinic and are able to help you get breastfeeding established.

Your meals are catered for and partner meals can be purchased.

We have Premium, Private and Standard Rooms. View our rooms

Standard rooms

Standard rooms are fully funded and are twin share so you will generally be sharing with another person. These rooms have a bathroom en-suite and telephone.

Private rooms

Private rooms are partly funded but there is an additional charge. You will have the room to yourself with a bathroom en-suite. These rooms have a telephone, fridge and TV.

Premium Rooms

In addition to the facilities in our private rooms our large size premium Rooms have a queen sized bed and enhanced hotel services.

Medical Insurance

Check your medical insurance as your policy may contribute towards a private room in Birthcare. If this is the case, you will need to pay upfront and claim back from your insurance company.

 

Postnatal Services

Newborn Hearing Screening

All babies are tested at birth to see that all is well. Some of your baby's health checks are called screening. The audiology team visits daily, 7 days a week from 9am. A consent process will take place at the bedside.

BCG Service

The BCG team visit daily from Monday to Friday from 11am depending on referrals from ADHB

You will be offered a BCG for your baby if:
You or your family/whanau have ever been ill with tuberculosis (TB)
You or your family/whanau have been in contact with a person with TB in the last year
You or your family/whanau have lived in a Country considered at risk for TB, in the last 5 years

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy classes are held on Level 1 in the education room on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10.00am to 11.00am.

Paediatric Service

We have a paediatrician who visits daily as required. If your baby needs to see a paediatrician a referral will be made by your LMC.

Lactation Service

We have lactation consultants on staff while you are staying at Birthcare. If you need to see a lactation consultant once you are home, you are welcome to come to our clinic. Clinics are held on Monday or Thursday by appointment. Appointments are free if your baby is under four weeks with a written referral fom your LMC.
