Lactation Consultancy
Breast is best but establishing breast feeding can be a real challenge even when you have the best preparation and the best intentions. Birthcare has qualified lactation consultants on staff and on most shifts.
Lactation Consultants qualify with the International Board of Lactation Consultants and will be identified with the initials IBCLC on their name badge.
Should you require expert advice, while a Birthcare client, this service is free.
Lactation Clinic
If you are experiencing difficulties with breastfeeding once you are home, you are welcome to attend Birthcare's Lactation Clinic, which is held on Mondays and Thursdays. You may either self refer or be referred by your LMC. The appointment will be for a one hour private consultation with a Lactation Consultant and arranged to coincide with a breastfeed.
Women do not need to have been a client of Birthcare to access this service.
Referrals may also be made during pregnancy for those women who have anatomical problems, previous surgery that may be a risk to breastfeeding or who have experienced difficulties breastfeeding in the past. Download referral form.

Charges
This service is free in the first 4 weeks after birth with a written referral for each visit from your LMC or midwife otherwise a cost of $60 applies. Pregnancy visits are $60.
Breast Pump Hire
Birthcare also offers a breast pump hire service for those mothers who need to express breastmilk. The breast pumps are hired on a weekly or monthly basis and the attachments are purchased by each mother. It may be appropriate to take the advice of a Lactation Consultant before committing to a particular pump.
